Project Extension Strengthens Leap for Life’s Work in Health Data

After three successful years, Health Data Sweden has been granted renewed recognition as a European Digital Innovation Hub. The extension enables the project to scale up its activities and continue strengthening the digitalisation of health data in Sweden. As a partner in the national ecosystem, Leap for Life will continue to contribute expertise and networks to support companies and public-sector organisations in developing innovative, data-driven solutions for the future of healthcare.

During its first three years, Health Data Sweden has built a strong national ecosystem bringing together regions, universities and innovation actors. The project has now been granted an extension under the EU’s Digital Europe Programme, creating new opportunities to further accelerate its work. A total of SEK 50 million in funding will support small and medium-sized enterprises as well as the public sector in increasing their digital maturity in the field of health data. Leap for Life has been part of this ecosystem since its launch in 2023 and will now continue its engagement for a further three years.

“This decision confirms Sweden’s role as a key player in Europe’s efforts to harness data and AI to improve health and welfare. The next phase is about scaling up — enabling more companies, regions, municipalities and healthcare providers to benefit from the infrastructure and knowledge we have built,” says Sebastiaan Meijer, Project Coordinator for Health Data Sweden and Professor at KTH Royal Institute of Technology.

“The project extension allows us to continue supporting companies and public-sector actors that want to advance their capabilities in health data.”

Halland Strengthens Its Role in Health Data

Health Data Sweden brings together partner organisations from across the country, including regions, universities and innovation environments. From 2026, Region Halland will join as a new partner, further strengthening Halland’s position and creating better conditions for a more coordinated regional approach. This will help establish clearer pathways between research, healthcare, industry and innovation.

“Region Halland joining as a partner is very positive. It shows that we share a common direction and ambition, and it gives Halland even stronger conditions to become a leading actor in health data. Together, we can build greater regional momentum and make it easier for both companies and public organisations to take the next step in their digital development,” says Emma Börjesson, Head of Operations at Leap for Life.

Focus on Growth, Innovation and Digital Maturity

With the new funding, Health Data Sweden will scale up its efforts and offer more targeted support to companies and organisations throughout the entire innovation journey — from idea to market-ready solution.

“The project extension allows us to continue supporting companies and public-sector actors that want to advance their capabilities in health data. We are seeing growing demand, and with this support we can help ensure that more solutions reach implementation and make a real difference in healthcare,” Emma Börjesson concludes.

Through its role in Health Data Sweden, Leap for Life will remain part of the EU-wide network of Digital Innovation Hubs. This creates new opportunities for international collaboration, knowledge exchange and access to resources that strengthen both Halland’s and Sweden’s position in the rapidly growing AI and data economy.
