Innovation Readiness Level

A Practical Way to Assess Innovation Readiness

This new tool provides a structured, evidence-based assessment of innovation development, tailored specifically to the conditions of the Life Science sector. It builds on the KTH Innovation Readiness Level (KTH IRL) framework and helps companies analyse their idea from several key perspectives, creating a clear overall view of their current position.

The tool makes it easier to identify both strengths and areas for development, providing a solid foundation for continued progress.

How Does it Work?

By answering a series of questions, companies receive a comprehensive overview of their innovation readiness and development needs.

The analysis tool is divided into three Life Science areas and includes specific dimensions for:

  • Health Technology
  • Medical Technology and Diagnostics
  • Drug Development

The assessment serves both as internal development support and as a basis for dialogue with investors, partners and other stakeholders.

This is an example of how innovation readiness can be visualised across the different dimensions. It provides a clear snapshot of where an innovation stands and what is required to take the next step.

Eight perspectives on innovation readiness

Understanding how mature an innovation is requires several perspectives to be considered together. The Innovation Readiness Level (IRL) tool does this through eight dimensions that highlight development, implementation and future potential.

Each dimension addresses a central aspect of innovation readiness and is assessed on a scale from 1 to 9, with clear definitions for each level.

For every dimension, the milestones and activities required to progress to the next level are described. This creates structure, makes progress measurable and supports clear prioritisation in the innovation process.

  • CRL: Customer Readiness
  • TRL: Technology Readiness
  • TMRL: Team and Organisational Readiness
  • BRL: Business Model and Scalability Readiness
  • IPRL: Intellectual Property Readiness
  • FRL: Funding Readiness
  • RRL: Regulatory Readiness
  • SRL: Sustainability Readiness
