The project Capacity for Quality Assurance of Health Apps aims to enhance knowledge and capacity within the public sector to ensure the quality of health apps. This, in turn, is expected to lead to the adoption of more safe and effective digital health services.
The rapid development of digital health services has resulted in a significant increase in the number of health apps available on the market. Currently, there are over 270,000 health apps accessible in Sweden, yet a unified national framework for quality assurance is lacking. This creates challenges for manufacturers, the public sector, and individual users alike.
Today, municipalities and regions are responsible for independently verifying the quality of apps. This leads to higher development costs for companies and a slower implementation process. At the same time, private individuals lack clear information about which apps are safe and effective to use.
The project aims to increase knowledge about health app quality assurance, implement existing frameworks, and strengthen the public sector’s capacity to efficiently evaluate and introduce digital health services. Ultimately, this is expected to foster greater trust in health apps and establish common guidelines for a more efficient public-sector implementation.
